Transportation

This week we started our transportation unit. We talked about traffic signs, what they mean and the different shapes. We made traffic lights and learned that red means stop and green means go and some said yellow means speed up to make it through the light! Just kidding!
For literacy the kids selected a shape sheet and they wrote words and drew pictures using the Sign Poster to copy the sign. They did a great job drawing and writing.
We learned all about bridges and they must be built strong enough to hold heavy weight and to survive earthquakes, strong winds and extreme temperatures. We experimented with blocks and then made bridges using toothpicks and marshmallows. They also enjoyed eating a few marshmallows while creating their bridge!
We built roads and learned roads are paths to help people know where to go. Roads are made out of rocks, dirt and concrete. They built their own roads using, sand, glue, pencils and stickers to add a few more details!
And finally, we did some rhyming.

At The Pond.....

We are almost completed with our At the Pond unit. This week we made a Mayfly and learned about their bizarre lifecycle! We talked about snails and made snail trails with paint, glue and sand. We used a q-tip to make trails on our paper.
I am a firm believer in learning through play and I enjoy when the kids have special requests to do other projects or activities. We played with water tools (we used an eyedropper to squeeze and release). We used baking soda and vinegar to watch it fizz! We also spent a lot of time playing with play dough this week! This is great for the tiny muscles in their hands. We worked on the letter Qq as well. All of the older kids recognize the letters in the alphabet. This year we are focusing on the sounds letters make.

Pond Insects.....

This week we started discussing pond insects. We made a dragonfly with popsicle stick and tissue paper. We learned about pesky mosquitos and that they are food for many birds, bats, fish, frogs, turtles spiders and dragonflies. They learned that mosquitos are plant eaters, they bite people to get blood to nourish their eggs. We set out paper, cotton swabs and paint. The kids rolled a dice and then "poked" the letter P that many times. Then we counted the "mosquito bites."  We read There Was a Little Turtle poem and the kids used clothes pin to snap each piece along the way.  The last pond insect we made was a Water Strider.  They have long legs to spread out their body weight and keep them from breaking through the surface of the water. They each made their own Water Strider using craft sticks, pipe cleaners and glue. We tested each Strider to see if they would float or not. If they did not float the kids adjusted their legs so they would be able to float!

We had a great deal of entertainment with good ol' boxes this week. We had a delivery of new storage bins and every kiddo had fun playing with the boxes. The older kids colored the boxes the younger ones climbed in, out and around the boxes all week! Simple fun!
