Rock Planets......

This week we discussed rock planets. There are four different rock planets in our solar system. These "terrestrial" planets have solid surfaces, so spaceships are able to land on them. Pluto was once considered the smallest and furthest rock planet from the sun but now is recognized only as a dwarf planet.
Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is special because it is the only planet with known life. Earth is mostly made up of ocean water. We gave the kids an invitation to create their own Earth. They were given paper, glue, markers and a paper plate. The kids could tear or cut their green, black and blue paper to create their earth collage.
Planet Mercury is extremely hot and cold. We made a planet Mercury stick. We painted one circle red and the other blue to represent the hot and cold!
Mars is know as the "Red Planet" because of all the iron. They created their own version of Mars using paper, red, sand and stickers.
We worked on letter R & Z. Next week we will finish the rock planets and start the giant plants! 5-4-3-2-1 Blast off!

The moon is very old. It can be seen in the sky as a full circle in in slices. The moon has craters from asteroids hitting it. Humans have landed on the moon. We discussed that the moon's surface is rough and mountainous with many craters. We used tin foil and paint to create a moon with craters. We also pretended to be astronauts and gathered moon rocks to take back to Earth!
We learned comets are like dirty snowballs! They are made of ice, dust and small rocky particles. We made our own comets with tin foil, for the ice and dust, and crepe paper for the tail!
We worked on letters Rr & Ss.

Happy Valentine's Day! We had a fun filled week filled with lots of love! The older kids decorated bags for the younger kids for our Valentine exchange. I will miss all my little helpers next year.
We worked on the letter Vv this week.

Blast off to Space....

We learned all about the stars and sun this week. Stars are balls of gas and can be blue, red or orange. A star goes away when it explodes. An exploding star is called a supernova. We pretended our closed fist was a star and an open hand is a supernova. They made their own sparkly star headband with paper and glitter.
The sun is a hat ball of gas, so make sure you don't look at it! The earth moves around the sun. They made a sun mask using a paper plate, sticker eyes and an elastic piece. They wore it while spinning slowly in a circle just like the sun does.
We also learned about constellations!
