We also practiced cutting and color sorting. We cut up strips of paper and then sorted into the ovals. I tried to make it look like Easter eggs in the grass. We had a terrific day!
Who needs paper and pencil when you have dirt, rocks and sticks? Today we did some more exploring in the Green Belt. We used sticks to write in the dirt and rocks to form letters. We even had a discussion about sinking and floating! These boys threw rocks and sticks in the river for quite some time. They noticed the sticks would float and would watch them float away. We also practiced cutting and color sorting. We cut up strips of paper and then sorted into the ovals. I tried to make it look like Easter eggs in the grass. We had a terrific day!

Social/physical distancing, this is something children do not understand and is difficult to explain to a young child. After all, they should be able to hug their friends and hold their hands when on walks, things they have always done.
Sensory bins have always been my go-to with toddlers. I can typically come up with something for the kids to explore and enjoy. With the current COVID 19 crisis I am trying to minimize the use of play dough, beans or any other item that cannot be washed and sanitized. I typically make my own play dough, however, finding flour and salt lately is nearly next to impossible so making play dough for individual children is not an option. Today, I tried something new for me and my group. We used butcher paper to cover our table. I gave the kids a variety of markers and crayons to decorate our table. The only direction the kids were given was to put the lids back on the markers! They loved this activity and we ended up with some pretty unique artwork. We took turns to keep our distance and to give everyone some space. These are unprecedented times. Remember, we are all navigating through this new territory together! We are experiencing life as we have never before or thought we would ever experience. Did you ever think living in the United States you'd be standing in line for toilet paper, paper towels, meat or any other essential? My daughter spent her first day of college Spring break standing in line to get toilet paper and then delivered to family and friends in need. These are definitely some hard times we are all facing; everyone has been impacted in one way or another. I am trying to keep normalcy for the little people in my life. We had a small group today and I am doing what I can to keep a routine for these kiddos. Today we made shamrocks, rainbow names, and took a walk, or I should say we went on a bear hunt! The kids are still loving "Going on a Bear Hunt." We pretended to run through a river, oozy mud, a dark forest, and a snowstorm! Then we came home and took a nap!
I encourage everyone to take a deep breath, go outside enjoy the sunshine, and enjoy time with your family. We are all typically so busy in our day to day lives. Take this time to relax, enjoy things you normally do not have the time to do and enjoy the people around you. Today I took a run outside, it was uplifting to see so many people out enjoying the sunshine. Some by themselves and some with their families just taking a leisurely stroll and everyone I encountered smiled and said hello! We will get through these difficult times. Remember to always be kind and willing to help others in need. I am not hoarding, but if you need some basic essentials such as paper towels, baby wipes, toilet paper, or even food, please let me know. I can certainly spare a roll of TP, a package of baby wipes, or can of veggies. Stay happy, healthy and positive! I gave the kiddos some black beans and construction vehicles and let their imaginations run. They played with this for quite a while. Pushing, piling and pouring!
We also made a train using shapes. Little Blue Truck! We have been reading this book and today we brought it to life. Our first activity was to make a muddy truck. The kids put their trucks together and then we used brown paint, marbles and a container to shake up and create a muddy looking truck! The kids had so much fun shaking this container and and making noise with the marbles. They were so excited to see how their muddy trucks would look when they were done shaking the box.
The next activity was an absolute hit with the kids and this kept them engaged all morning! I made some "mud" play dough and gave them animals and trucks and then let their little imaginations run free! I enjoyed observing and listening to their many conversations during this invitation to play. Today we matched letters and made tire tracks. The kids would pick a tire with a letter and drive it to the car with the matching letter. The older kids also picked a car, found the letter on their recording sheet and would trace the matching letters. We are primarily focusing on upper case letters.
We used black paint and trucks to make tire marks. Each child selected the color of paper they wanted to use and rolled their truck in black paint. Toddlers love activities that include playing with all types of transportation theme items including vehicles such as cars, trucks, airplanes and more. This topic is part of their everyday lives.
We can travel to school, to the park, to the grocery store, to Grandma's house, and just about anywhere else on land in cars and buses. We have been playing with trains, planes and automobiles for a few weeks! Today they wanted to "construction" vehicles so of course we also brought out the sand. For our car project we sponge painted white paper and each child chose the color they wanted to use. We let the paper dry and then cut out a car and added wheels. These little cars turned out really cute! Bridges can be made from different materials, like wood, steel, rope or cement. Bridges are strong enough to support people and vehicles. You can go over or under a bridge. They help us cross over water and other obstacles.
We have spent the last few days building bridges. We have used blocks and paper. The kids created a bridge using blocks and then they were encouraged to draw a picture of the bridge they built. Most of the kids chose to use pencil so you may have to zoom in o their drawings! We also built a bridge using a paper plate and paper roll tubes. We have looked at several different photos of bridges and of course we have been singing London Bridges is Falling Down! |
