The few pics of the babies I just had to add because they have fun with us too! I can barely wait until they are making crafts and learning more. These kids melt my heart.
We made x-ray fish and went "diving" for sting rays! If the rain continues around here we just might be swimming with the fish. I am looking forward to some sunshine. This week we've learned about the unique Sea Horse. We learned that the daddy seahorse actually carries the baby eggs before they hatch. We learned seahorses have a small fin that propels them forward then they drift through the water. They grab on to things with their tails when they need to stop and some males use their tails to fight off enemies . We played a fun seahorse game; pick a number card and then put the same number of baby seahorses in the daddy's belly!
Today we learned about sea sponges and created some fine paintings with sponges and stencils. Had fun discussions with the kids asking if they think a sea sponge is living or nonliving and what do you think is inside of a sea sponge. We passed around a sea sponge wet and dry to feel and squeeze. We watched a fun video about sea sponges that gave the kids a tour of the ocean floor! http://www.oceanicresearch.org/education/wonders/sponges.html They learned that they are actually living and come in in a rainbow of beautiful colors and some sponges can grow large enough to fit a person inside!
This week we are deep in the oceans talking about sharks! We made shark fins; this was to help the kids understand that shark skin may look smooth but it actually feels very rough because it is made up of tiny teeth-like structures. We put glue on the fins and then sprinkled black sand. This was a great way to show the kids the texture of sharks. We have talked about shark's teeth; they can have hundreds of teeth and many rows so that when one falls out, another is ready to take its place. We had fun putting together our sharks today......getting all the kids to look at me for their picture is another project!
We will finish up with large sea creatures this week and learn about small sea creatures next week. (Jellyfish, sea star, seahorse, sea sponge and x-ray fish) |
