All about Pumpkins.....

10/23/2017

We started off the week talking about pumpkins. Pumpkins sense; the kids should be able to describe how a pumpkin looks, sounds, feels, smells and how pumpkin seeds tastes.  Okay, well maybe not how a pumpkin seed tastes;  I couldn't get any takers on this one!  We learned a new pumpkin song. Our song was about a pumpkin that rolled down a hill so we used small pumpkins and blocks.  The kids were encouraged to build something that the pumpkin could roll down. We tested the "hills" to see which one uses the pumpkins to roll the fastest!

Color sorting; most pumpkins are orange.  We sorted pictures into 2 groups; orange and not orange!

We painted pumpkins using marbles and measured how tall pumpkins are with counters.

The kids learned the difference between a pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern.  Just add a face and you have a jack-o-lantern!  We cut open a pumpkin to see what is inside, the kids looked and discovered pulp and seeds.  Once we were done, we added some baking soda, food coloring and vinegar for a
pumpkin explosion!

Pumpkin faces; social and emotional skills are so important for kids.  We sang a song to the tune of Where is Thumbkin and made the face that showed each emotion.  They had so much fun singing and making faces!

What starts with J&P?  We sorted pictures some started with J and others started with P.  They picked a card and tried to identify the sounds of letters J&P.

We have been using Tara West's (
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Tara-West) differentiated ABC books and the kids have really enjoyed reading.  We have books for each letter we are learning and read daily.

We finished off the week making spider webs using our hands prints and bats!

We had some beautiful weather this week which allowed us to have some fun playing in the leafs.  This week we made pumpkin spice play dough and a fall sensory bin.  We worked on letter Cc, numbers 3 & 4 and rectangles.

The kids learned owls are nocturnal, have large eyes and a flat face.  We used bubble wrap to paint our Indian corn and we made fall trees using rectangles.  We also worked on letter Nn and practiced cutting this week!  The weather was gorgeous and we were able to get in some park time too.

Squirrels, acorns, trees, sunflowers and letter U!

The kids learned that squirrels will typically gather and save a lot of their food all year round but this is definitely true when it comes to the autumn time. They really like to bury their food! When you see them collecting all their nuts just before winter it is because they are getting ready for winter months and they want to make sure that they have enough food to last through the winter.

The kids also learned all about acorns. Acorns are nuts that form on mature oak trees. The older the tree, the more acorns produced! Squirrels love to eat acorns.

Sunflowers got their name because the flowers turn toward the sun!
