We had a great deal of entertainment with good ol' boxes this week. We had a delivery of new storage bins and every kiddo had fun playing with the boxes. The older kids colored the boxes the younger ones climbed in, out and around the boxes all week! Simple fun!
This week we started discussing pond insects. We made a dragonfly with popsicle stick and tissue paper. We learned about pesky mosquitos and that they are food for many birds, bats, fish, frogs, turtles spiders and dragonflies. They learned that mosquitos are plant eaters, they bite people to get blood to nourish their eggs. We set out paper, cotton swabs and paint. The kids rolled a dice and then "poked" the letter P that many times. Then we counted the "mosquito bites." We read There Was a Little Turtle poem and the kids used clothes pin to snap each piece along the way. The last pond insect we made was a Water Strider. They have long legs to spread out their body weight and keep them from breaking through the surface of the water. They each made their own Water Strider using craft sticks, pipe cleaners and glue. We tested each Strider to see if they would float or not. If they did not float the kids adjusted their legs so they would be able to float!
