Winter Gear.....

1/29/2018

This week we are working on letters F & Y and talking about winter gear.

We made mittens, hats, coats, snowshoes and sleds! The kids had some lacing practice when making mittens and snowshoes. We set out several materials to make a coat; interesting listening to their thoughts on how many pockets and buttons they wanted on their coats. We also played a memory game with animals that live in the woods.

We ended the week talking about Ground Hog Day! We have 6 more weeks of winter. Now, if it will snow in here that would be great! Please, just a little snow. Is that too much to ask?

We finished letter Qq and Ff is our next letter.
Our morning work this week is matching letters, visual discrimination "which one is different?" and building letters with counters.
The kids were invited to create a snowflake. They were given colored water, paint, glue, glitter, eye droppers, coffee filters and scissors. Their creations are beautiful! Each tried to make their own snowflake using scissors and coffee filters; some asked if they could use my snowflakes I made, but they all gave it a try! We discussed why snowflakes are so special; they are all different! We also made "Dancing Icicles". We talked about ice; ice is stiff and cold. Icicles grow when it slowly melts and then freezes again. We danced with our dancing icicles and made snowflake shapes with their bodies; feet apart and arms up wide!
What do you think will happen to a pinecone if you put it in water? We did a pinecone experiment! We immersed a pinecone in water and let it sit for a while. Then we compared a dried pinecone to a wet pinecone. They learned the wet ones close up and the dry ones are open!
We finished off the week with a snowstorm painting. They were given black paper, white paper, blue paper, glue, white paint and bubble wrap to create their paintings. A snowstorm picture was provided and we talked about how they could use their supplies to create their own.

We are wrapping up letter Gg and starting Qq.
We learned some fun facts about owls. They have great eyesight and they have strong talons (claws) which help them catch their prey. Most owls hunt insects, small mammals and other birds. The kiddos were given paper, paint, feathers and cupcake liners to create and owl! They did a great job and it was very interesting to hear about their thought process when making their owls.
Your child should be able to describe a pine tree and the life cycle of a pine tree.

Winter in the Woods....

This week we are learning about forest Animals. We learned that most deers have white tails and when a deer senses danger, it waves its tail as a warning to others as it runs and leads away to safety. Some deers have antlers on their heads. The antlers help defend against predators, as well as help them blend in with the trees in the forest.
They made a hedgehog using a fork to make quills. A hedgehog has over 5,000 quills that are hollow in the middle and not poisonous.
We learned that bears like to play and splash in rivers and try to catch fish. We talked about where bears like to build their homes. Each child made a cozy bear den. We made a sensory bin with bears, fish and water and the kids loved this activity!
We used shaving cream and glue to make animal tracks in the snow.
We are also working on letter Gg.
