Learning through play.....

This week we used sand trays to draw letters and we used letter stamps. The younger kids are learning the first letter of their name. We also worked on numbers and counting and the letter Ss. They made a seahorse and snake. They are all doing so well using scissors! Very proud of these kiddos and all their great work.

The older kids completed a snowman directed drawing and they are so cute!

The older kids love play dough! They don't know this, but they are developing so many skills while using play dough. When students roll and form play dough, they are developing important fine motor skills that will help them learn to write in the future. This is just one of the many benefits of playing with play dough!

I printed the play dough letter mats from Fun Learning For Kid:

Get ready for next week as we blast off into space! 5-4-3-2-1

Freezing water....

We took a dive into the arctic waters this week. How do the animals stay warm in the freezing waters? We did a fun blubber experiment to show the kids how these animals can keep warm in the cold waters. I started by preparing a container of icy, cold water. I filled a ziplock bag with crisco for the blubber and then put another bag inside so their hands were not a greasy mess! I explained to the kids that the bag was like skin and the crisco was like blubber. The kids put their bare hands in the icy water and we timed how long they could last. Then we put our hands in the blubber to show how they were able to keep their hand in the water for much longer because of the blubber. We also had an arctic sensory bin complete with polar animals, snow and icebergs.

We completed a penguin directed drawing. Oh my goodness, these turned out so cute! I found the directed drawing directions on Pinterest posted by Pocket of Preschool: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZWsESgLBbNLg4Lu0qhEfmOrtMepF0S55/view

I took a field trip myself last weekend to Anchorage, Alaska! I didn't see a polar bear but I did see a moose, experienced some freezing cold temperatures and my son's hockey team won the Polar Bear Classic tournament! The pictures do not show the true beauty. My son said, "This is like a Bob Ross painting in real life!"

This week we are learning about arctic animals.  We learned all about polar bears.  They are big and strong and like to eat fresh meat.  They enjoy rolling around in the snow and swimming in the freezing waters!  They have black skin to soak up the sun's rays, a layer of blubber and thick fur to keep warm!  Our art project we cut out a black polar bear to resemble the skin and used cotton balls for the fur.  We also made handprint polar bears!     We also worked on Ww; we made a walrus and whale.

Winter....

Welcome back. We are ready for 2019! We are getting back to our daily routine. This week we worked on the letter Ii and some winter activities.
We built a snowman with play dough and painted a snowman. We put three circles on paper to build the snowman, then used different shades of blue to paint snow around the circles. They were give the option to use a q-tip or their finger for the snow. The younger kids used a paint brush to paint around their snowman. Once dried we took off the circles! Bam...we had a snowman! I loved watching their expressions when the circles were removed. They turned out adorable with their added accessories! The older kids cut out their own hats, arms, scarfs and noses! The younger kids placed the accessories on their snowmen.
The little ones worked on colors and matching objects this week.
