The kiddos learned that chickens can jump, which can make it look like they are flying! We discovered that, even though chickens can jump and flap their wings, chickens cannot actually fly. What a fun surprise!
Farmer Ben also brought a brand-new farm friend, Pumpkin the piglet! 🐷 Pumpkin is just 3 weeks old, and the kiddos loved watching this little piggy eat. 
We wrapped up our busy day with a Pp letter activity, making our Pp's for pig and penguin. 
What a wonderful day of learning, animals, and farm fun! 🐔🐷💛
]]><![CDATA[Chickens, Play Dough & Lots of Fun.....]]>Fri, 11 Sep 2026 00:12:51 GMThttps://www.tinytoesdc.com/blog/september-10th-2026Today, we took a fun little detour from our All About Me theme and spent the day learning all about chickens! 🐔❤️
The excitement was extra special because Ben from RainyBug Petting Farm is coming back to visit us tomorrow! The kids can hardly wait to see what furry and feathered friends he brings with him. 🐐🐰🐓 We are definitely counting down the minutes!
To get ready for our special visitor, each child made their very own chicken friend! We used paper plates, paint sticks, and lots of fluffy feathers to bring our chickens to life. I helped create the little feet and beaks, and the results were absolutely adorable! 🎨🪶
I also introduced play dough to some of our newest class members today! They had so much fun exploring this new sensory experience. They used rolling pins to flatten and roll the dough and scissors to practice cutting it. ✂️😊 There was lots of squeezing, squishing, rolling, and cutting!
Play dough is not only fun, but it is also an excellent way for little hands to build strength and develop those tiny hand muscles that are so important for future skills like writing, cutting, and using classroom tools. 💪👐

Cluck, cluck… bring on the farm animals, Ben! 🐔💛🐓🐐
]]><![CDATA[Head....]]>Wed, 09 Sep 2026 19:33:22 GMThttps://www.tinytoesdc.com/blog/head4798680Today was another fantastic day of learning and creativity in our preschool classroom!
We learned that heads can move in many different ways and explored the different parts of our heads and faces, including our ears, eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth. We also learned that our brains are soft and our skulls are hard, and that our skulls help protect our brains. 🧠
For our creative activity, the children made their own heads using yarn for hair and googly eyes. They were encouraged to add the other facial features we discussed. Everyone did such a great job using their creativity and remembering the parts of the face! 👀👃👄
We also had a busy day practicing letter Pp, coloring, and using stickers. The children strengthened their fine-motor skills by tearing paper, gluing  and coloring in their journals.  ✂️🖍️📖
It was a fun-filled day of learning, creating, and growing! I am  so proud of all their hard work! 💕

They learn through sensory discover by moving through and experiencing the world. As the children move, they become more aware of what they can do, see and explore. Our bodies are our toolkits for discovery. As children build an appreciation for their bodies, they gain confidence and are more willing to try new things. 
We are all unique. We look different and have different names, interests, and favorite things. We also share commonalities with each other. Mirrors help us look at our own reflection.  
Today, our mirrors became tools for discovery! The children carefully looked at their reflections and created their very own self portraits. 
We talked about:
  • 👀 The color of our eyes
  • 💇 The color and style of our hair
  • 👃 Our noses
  • 👄 Our mouths
  • 😊 The special features that make each face unique
We also looked closely at our “Inspiration Photo” and talked about the different facial features we noticed. The children had so much fun observing themselves and turning their discoveries into artwork!

We started letter Pp, it has straight lines and curves.  They used a q-tip to dot paint the letter Pp and they glued the letter Pp in their journals.

It was a fun filled day of creativity, fine motor practice, and learning all about Ff!

We started by learning how to use paint in our classroom. The children chose the color they wanted to use to paint with today. 🎈There will be so many opportunities to paint this year and not just with paintbrushes! 
After we painted, they were encouraged to draw a self-portrait! At this age, I certainly don’t expect a perfectly recognizable person, and that’s not the goal. 💕 I love seeing where each child starts and watching their skills, confidence, and creativity progress throughout the school year.
We also used confetti to decorate the first letter of our names, giving us a fun way to practice name recognition while strengthening those little fine-motor muscles. ✂️💗
Our seasoned preschooler worked on number recognition and sorting numbers 1–4. She also practiced one-to-one correspondence with a fun caterpillar activity! I drew the caterpillar heads, and she used dot stickers to fill in each caterpillar with the corresponding number. 🐛🔢
So much learning can happen through simple, playful activities and we’re just getting started! 💗
Paint, letters, numbers, and caterpillars… it was a pretty fun preschool day! 🎨🎈🐛✨

We continued working on the letter Ff and I introduced the kiddos to dot markers and markers. They had fun getting creative while practicing their letter recognition and coloring skills!
We also worked on how many letters in my name counting activity. Each child counted the number of letters in their name and then counted out that same number of brown circles to glue into their fine-motor journals. This was a fun way to sneak in counting, one-to-one correspondence, and fine-motor practice all at once! 😊
The children were encouraged to color the letter Ff with markers. Once they finished, I cut out their letters and placed them into their journals. The older kiddos also practiced writing the letter Ff on the page. For the younger kids we are simply working on building muscles in their tiny hands so they can eventually learn to form letters!
For our seasoned kiddos, we added a little extra challenge! They got to work on some additional activities so they can begin picking up where they left off in June. It’s wonderful seeing those familiar skills come back while giving them opportunities to keep growing!
So many little hands were busy learning today! ❤️✂️🖍️

We are learning how to use our classroom supplies safely and responsibly. We talked about taking care of our materials, sharing with our friends, and cleaning up when we are finished.
We also had some letter Ff fun! The kiddos used stickers to form the letter Ff, giving us a chance to practice letter recognition while strengthening those little fingers and working on hand-eye coordination.
I also introduced our fine motor journals to our new kiddos today! These journals will give the children lots of opportunities to practice skills such as tracing, drawing, making lines and shapes, and building the hand strength they need for future writing.

When your toddler comes home and says, “I just played at school (daycare)” it might 
And they did have fun, but it’s not just playing!
Play is how young children learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them. Through play, toddlers are constantly building important skills that will support them as they grow.
They’re learning how to:
  • Share and take turns — learning that other people have needs and ideas, too.
  • Solve problems — figuring out how to build that tower, fit the puzzle piece, or decide what to do when something doesn’t go as planned.
  • Communicate — using words, gestures, facial expressions, and eventually more complex language to express what they want and need.
  • Cooperate with others — working together, negotiating, and learning how to be part of a group.
  • Develop creativity and imagination — turning a cardboard box into a car or pretending a block is a phone.
  • Practice emotional skills — experiencing excitement, frustration, patience, joy, and learning how to manage those big toddler feelings.
  • Build independence and confidence — making choices, trying new things, and discovering, “I can do this!”
So, the next time your little one says, “I just played at daycare,” remember that those seemingly simple moments of play are anything but simple.

They are learning. They are growing. They are building relationships. And they are developing skills they’ll carry with them for years to come—all while they play.
Because for toddlers, play isn’t separate from learning. Play is learning.
