Today we learned about sea sponges and created some fine paintings with sponges and stencils. Had fun discussions with the kids asking if they think a sea sponge is living or nonliving and what do you think is inside of a sea sponge. We passed around a sea sponge wet and dry to feel and squeeze. We watched a fun video about sea sponges that gave the kids a tour of the ocean floor! http://www.oceanicresearch.org/education/wonders/sponges.html They learned that they are actually living and come in in a rainbow of beautiful colors and some sponges can grow large enough to fit a person inside!
This week we've learned about the unique Sea Horse. We learned that the daddy seahorse actually carries the baby eggs before they hatch. We learned seahorses have a small fin that propels them forward then they drift through the water. They grab on to things with their tails when they need to stop and some males use their tails to fight off enemies . We played a fun seahorse game; pick a number card and then put the same number of baby seahorses in the daddy's belly!
