This rhyme is about a tenacious spider climbing up a spout. This is a good rhyme for children to recite while they practice fine motor movements, like moving their fingers to imitate the "Itsy, Bitsy Spider" crawling. Spiders are fascinating creatures because they can produce silk to make intricate webs. Spiders build their webs then sit and wait for their prey to become stuck in the silk threads. During this Invitation to Create, children used their construction and problem solving skills to build their own itsy bitsy spider webs. Like a spider, children experimented with how to wrap and weave the yarn "silk" to create a unique web. Through this process they learned there is no right or wrong ways to build a web. There are multiple possibilities to explore.
As a group we played a matching game. I made a web on the table using yarn and randomly placed the cards in the spider web.
In our fine motor journals they drew lines to help the spider to the bottom of the page and they drew a spider with 8 legs.
We also worked on story sequencing and letter hunt using high-lighters.
