For fine motor skills today, we cut and glued strings. They did a great job with the glue. "Just a dot, not a lot!"
During circle time we read "Grandma, Grandpa, and Me." We also sorted upper and lower case letters.
Grandmas and grandpas are the parents of a mother or a father. Today we made Grandma's glasses. We talked about why some people need to wear glasses. We traced our hands and then they were encouraged to draw a family.

A dad, or father, is a man who raises children. Fathers are another kind of parent. We talked about the activites they do with their dad's. We read the book "Just Me and My Dad" by Mercer Mayer.
We worked on the letter Ff, built the letter Ff and practiced writing letter Ff in our fine motor journals. We looked for the letter Ff and colored pictures that started with letter Ff. They are loving their paper baskets they made this week and still playing with them! A mom, or mother, is a woman who raises children. Mothers are one kind of parent. Parents are family members who take care of children as they grow up. Today we read "Little Red Riding Hood and the Lonely Wolf" by Maria West. Little Red Riding Hood had a basket full of snacks she would share with Granny and the wolf. I gave the kids a paper bag and markers to decorate their basket. I asked all the kids what they would put in their basket for their mom. A few answers were, marshmallows, flowers, chocolate, and chocolate chips. They played and filled up their baskets with all kinds of stuff today!
We used tangrams and design mats to build families. They were also encouraged to build designs on their own. We built the letter Ff and glued Ff's in their fine motor journals. For other fine motor practice we used Q-tips to paint. Today we read "The New Baby" by Mercer Mayer. We have a few children our class that will be adding a baby to their family. Brothers and sisters are also called siblings.
I gave each child a puzzle and they were encouraged to draw their family. For fine motor we used stamps to create a picture and cut and pasted paper into our journals. They were also encouraged to draw red circles. They were playing in the rock/truck sensory bin today, I added red lids since we are learning about red and circles! Families are all unique and different. During this Invitation to Create, the students made a tree to represent their family. They made decisions about how many branches , apples and what colors to include. The younger kids glued red circles in their fine motor journals and the older kids traced a curved line. We used circles to create our names. The older kids traced their name on the circles.
Families are unique and come in many forms. At an early age, it is important for children to discuss not only their own family, but others' as well. Through discussions , books and play children will gain knowledge about how families work and how uniquely different they can be. Children are able to expand their understanding of families by learning that even though families look different all over the world, they share many similarities, too. Childcare classrooms can model positive familial dynamics by practicing cooperation, problem solving and kindness. In this way, teachers and caregivers can provide an environment that nurtures the idea that children are valued members of their family and childcare communities. This month we will focus on the letters Ff, Hh, and Tt. Numbers 1 and 2, shape circle and color red.
I introduced a few different sensory bins this week as well as play dough. They played in the rice bin and rock bin. The rock bin is very simple, various construction vehicles and rocks; very entertaining for all the kids! I added some rocks with letters for literacy.
The younger children were encouraged to draw circles in their fine motor journals and paste the paper they cut. The older kids also cut and pasted. The older kids are practicing cutting shapes and different types of lines. |
