A family tree is a chart or map that shows who is in your family from generation to generation. This tool is used to show how families were created and the relationships from one person to another. We discussed who is in their family (mom, dad, brothers, sisters, grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, dogs, cats etc). I explained a family is like a tree. There are many connected people that all share the same family roots.
Families can take many forms and are all unique. During this Invitation to Create, the children made a tree to represent their family. They made decisions about how many branches or apples to include and what colors to use. I encouraged them to draw faces on stickers, or just place as a collage! Open ended, process-based art like this allows children to create unique visual representation of their own personal experience.
