They were encouraged to draw an ant trail in their journals.
Leafcutter ants live on the forest floor. They are small but can carry heavy loads on their backs. These ants mostly carry leaves on their backs to take back to the nest. They used paint, google eyes, egg carton and pipe cleaners to make an ant! They were encouraged to draw an ant trail in their journals.

Mushrooms are fungi that easily grow on the forest floor because they don't need sunlight. Some mushrooms are safe to eat, but others are poisonous. There are over a million different types of mushrooms. They grow in many sizes and are found in dark, damp places.
They were encouraged to draw mushrooms in their journals. They decorated mushroom caps and attached to cut straws so they can stand in play dough. They pick a card, identify the number and put that many mushrooms in the play dough. Lily pads live and grown in the Amazon River. The Giant Amazon Water Lily is the largest of all the lily pads and can grow up to 9 feet in diameter. This plant is very strong and floats on top of the water. On some lily pads, a lotus flower is attached to the pad.
They were encouraged to look at the Inspiration Photo and create their own lotus flower. They used a paper plate, cup cake liner and markers. For fine motor they were encouraged to count out six hexagons and glue in book. They were encouraged to draw any type of line. Due to the lack of light, there are not many plants that grow on the forest floor. Some things that grow on the forest floor are ginger, moss and ferns. They are all living things that need water, soil and sunlight. Their roots grow in the dirt and gather nutrients to help them live. They used pattern blocks to design plants.
I cut the bottom off a sweet potato, we are going to do a sprout experiment. What do you think will happen if we give this root (sweet potato) sun and water? They will draw their observations for the next four weeks. I sure hope this goes better than the last time I tried this experiment, it was a complete flop! Many treasures are hiding on the rainforest floor. They colored letter J and hid a jewel under leaves. In our journals we used stickers to form the number 5 and put 5 stickers on the bottom of the page. They were encouraged to draw long hooks (letter J formation) and roots. Jaguars live in the forest floor layer. They have spots on their fur and are good at hiding. Jaguars are fast and can leap from tree to tree. Unfortunately, they are endangered species.
I placed a piece of butcher paper on the table and gave the kids different sized lids, cups and containers. They were encouraged to trace around the items to make spots. They also used an ink pad to make spots. They created a J is for Jaguar using J cut out, wiggle eyes, twist ties and markers. The shape of the month is hexagon and color is green. The forest floor is the bottom layer of the rainforest. It is dark and damp. Without sunlight, most plants can't grow. However, roots and many mushrooms are still found on the forest floor, along with a thin layer of fallen leaves, seeds, fruits, and branches. The forest floor is also a home to animals, such as ants and jaguars. It is important for children to be exposed to new concepts that build their knowledge and vocabulary. During this first week, children will learn to compare plants and animals of the rainforest with those of their own environments.
I did not feel it would be a good idea to dive into our next theme the day after Halloween. The day after Halloween = tired kiddos! I am sure with a little extra sleep tonight and a nutritious dinner they will bounce back to their usual selves in no time.
We used dot stickers to place on butcher paper, this is a great activity to get the kids moving and also excellent for creating conversations amongst each other. They stated the letter on the dot sticker, found the corresponding letter on the butcher paper, and placed the sticker on the paper. They also built letters and cut rectangles. Tomorrow we will start our new monthly theme, Explore the Rainforest! |
